In what was the first of a series of schemes set up by the Ventnor Enhancement Fund to help spruce up Ventnor, town mayor Cult. Doug Nettleton emphasised the refusal of townspeople to let its landmarks be blighted by vandalism by officially switching on the cascades' new lights on Thesday evening.

Vandals are blamed for smashing lights at the cascade and Ventnor Park in recent years. Ventnor Enhancement Fund raised the £8,000 needed to restore lighting to the natural water feature in April after the IW Council refused to carry out any more repairs to the two sites. The cash came from donations and fundraising efforts, plus a grant from the Ventnor The new vandal-proof lighting is similar to that used in a successful project to relight Bonchurch Pond, paid for by similar funding efforts. Ventnor town councillor Maureen Cawley, vice-chairman of the Ventnor Enhancement Fund, thanked businesses for their efforts to restore the cascade lighting and said: "This beautiful spot has been in darkness for the past two years and it has been a town effort to replace the lighting. "We have tried to involve the youngsters who frequented this area while work has been going on.

They have given us useful ideas and we hope they will look out for any possible vandalism." Ventnor Enhancement Fund has applied to become a charitable trust and hopes to encourage the Ventnor com- munity to get involved in more projects. The fund has drawn up a constitution, similar to that of Bonchurch, in which each town resident is a member and may come along to any committee meeting to make suggestions, offer help or give advice on ways to enhance and improve the town's appearance. Donations are being sought to fund a scheme to illuminate Ventnor Park. Anyone wishing to make a donation can send it to Bernard Cawley, treasurer of the Ventnor Enhance- ment Fund, Elcombe, Bonchurch Shute, Bon- church, P038 1NX. on beating vandalism Light shed Albert Edward Mor- gan.

CONTRIBUTED FORMER teacher, pho- tographer and Royal Marine Albert Edward Morgan, who inspired generations of Island youngsters to high sport- ing achievement, died at St Mary's Hospital on lbesday last week, aged 89. Mr Morgan was born in Swansea and moved to the Island in 1943, living in Binstead, Fishbourne and latterly Cherrywood Close, Arreton. Educated at St Joseph's RC School, Swansea, Mr Morgan began work at a woodcraft factory at 14. Three years later he joined the Royal Marines and later became a physical training instructor. Based at the Royal Marines' barracks in Deal, Kent, in 1939, Mr Morgan trained recruits in prepara- tion for the Second World War Mr Morgan rose to the rank of sergeant major and served in Algiers, Sierra Leone, Egypt, France, Italy, Iceland and Yugoslavia.

He was also stationed with 43 Commando at Hazlewood House, Ryde, where he had a lucky escape. Hazlewood House suf- fered a direct hit in an enemy bombing raid, during which seven men died and many more were injured but Mr Morgan had swapped his duty to play rugby on the mainland. The marine who stood in for him was one of the dead. During the war, Mr Morgan married his first wife, Betty, in Ryde in 1943. On leaving the service in 1946, he gained a teaching post at Bishop Lovett School, Ryde, where he spent his entire career.

Under Mr Morgan's guid- ance, the school achieved sporting excellence. In 1951, the school won the Baring Shield for soccer, an award presented to the Island's best school. Mr Morgan, a combined forces Amateur Boxing Association boxing champi- on in 1945, boxing judge and referee, helped inspire the school boxing team to win five Hampshire titles. He trained the school's gymnastics team to success in the Southern Counties Championships and went on to run the equally successful Queensway Gymnastics Club in Ryde. A keen photographer, Mr Morgan also ran the Island Studios photographic shop in Ryde with his son, Ian.

The business expanded to five shops across the Island. In retirement, Mr Morgan took up indoor and outdoor bowls and was a president of Sandown Bowls Club. On remembrance parades, he carried the Royal Marines Association standard. He married his second wife, Peggy, after the death of Betty at the age of 67. Mr Morgan leaves seven children, 22 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
