This is the BEST advice! I just tried it today, and it worked like a dream. I don't have the mod to track when enemy abilities come off cooldown, so I was always guessing at how to time the moth abilities, but Ikky just runs roughshod over it. Thanks!

This failed the first time because I did not keep up on turn 9 with Emerald Bite until Proto died. This will get you past Dora's Headbutt and the level pet will survive. Worked perfect.

Either I have the worlds worst luck or this strat doesn't work all that well anymore. Protowhelp is dying sometimes before Skyshaper dies, and failing that the moth isn't making it even halfway through Fangor.

Level 1 pet cannot survive Fangor's attack. If you don't let him in at least 1 round, leveling pet doesn't get XP.

A carry pet only needs to stay in for a full round if it is in the 1st slot. Bringing it in after your 1st pet dies then swapping straight to your 3rd pet is classed as a turn by the game and grants the pet xp if/when you win the battle.

There was a post somewhere that explained this, but here's the short of it:
A pet must be active at the end of a turn in order to receive experience for the fight. If it is the first pet it must complete the first turn of battle. If a pet dies that turn does not end until you select another pet at which point the new pet ends the turn. Your third pet automatically ends the turn if your first two pets are dead.

Keep in mind that Dor the Wall will use Healing Wave over Headbutt if both come up at the same time (unless it's full HP).
