Make your summer associate part of the team. The tendency is to give your summer associate one-off assignments. Research this isolated legal issue for my case. Or do this non-billable project that I've been waiting all year for someone to work on. Your summer associate can't file an appearance, and they're not qualified to do a lot of litigation tasks. So how can you make them feel like a full team member on your case?Easy. Just talk to them about the case. Whenever you see them. Or whenever there's a new development. They probably have insights you haven't thought of. And even if not, the work is so much more rewarding when they feel like part of the team. And don't stop the conversation when the summer is over. If your summer associate is local, take them out to lunch during the year and catch them up on your cases. If they're out of town, stay in touch however you like to.It's my 11-year anniversary of being a summer associate, and I'm still at the only firm I've ever known. Because they did things like this. They made me and kept me part of the team.

DWT Summer Tip #13 - Do you have a list of projects you've worked on this summer? If not, start one today.Natalie Cainsaid "Keep track of the work you do. As you continue your journey in the legal profession, you will need to disclose your prior work in order to clear conflicts - just as you did prior to joining your current organization. At a minimum, you should keep track of the clients on whose matters you work along with a short description of the work. If you are aware of adverse parties involved, keep track of those too. You will be in a much better position to fill in subsequent conflicts disclosures if you keep track as you go."Follow me for more DWT Summer TipsDavis Wright Tremaine LLP#summerinternship2023 #summertips #mentorshipmatters

Reflecting on my journey, I initially embarked on a litigation internship as an escape from overthinking and personal challenges. Little did I know, it would become my passion. A year ago, I couldn't have imagined the progress I've made. Yet, amidst the ongoing challenges, I've realized the power of consistent hard work.If someone had told me a year ago where I'd be today, I wouldn't have believed them. But here's the truth: dedication pays off. Whether in law, medicine, or any field, unwavering effort yields results. However, it's essential to have a driving force behind your actions. For me, it was my passion for the courtroom.Even during breaks, I found myself longing for the courtroom's energy. That same drive is crucial for your journey. Stay committed, stay focused, and soon enough, you'll achieve greatness.Remember, success isn't overnight. It's the culmination of relentless pursuit and genuine passion. Embrace the journey, and who knows where you'll end up. Here's to the next chapter, filled with even greater accomplishments. #Motivation #HardWorkPaysOff #PassionDrivenSuccess #litigationlove

This summer I started and completed the summer placement scheme at Addleshaw Goddard. I'm so grateful that I had the chance to utilise my legal knowledge, form connections and get a glimpse into what a trainee's typical day entails. Here are some key takeaways from my time at AG:Take the initiative: use these couple of weeks to really maximise your experience. If you find that you have some free time then speak to your colleagues or your supervisor about what you can do to help lighten their workload. I kept looking for ways to keep myself busy so that I could contribute to the team.Request feedback: After submitting each task, I requested more input from my supervisors so that I could strengthen any areas where I may have fallen short.Networking is key: Talk to people in various departments and positions. By doing so, you will learn about the firm's true culture, be able to envision the areas you wish to train in, and develop relationships with colleagues. Never hesitate to plan a coffee date or catch-up meeting, especially with someone who works in a department you are interested in.Enjoy the experience: Last but not least, try to have fun! AG organised multiple social events for us to meet with trainees and partners of the firm. Try to attend as many events as possible because it’s a great way to network (and it’s also really fun). Ask questions and use this as an opportunity to build upon your legal knowledge. The time flies by so quickly, so try to make the most out of your experience.I’d like to express my gratitude to everyone at AG and the early careers team for making my time there so enjoyable.

So I had a baby just before Christmas...Facing a year of mat leave, after almost 6 years in-house, it has been a good opportunity to reflect on the things I've loved, and the things that have surprised me, about my in-house career so far.In the 'love' camp:📣 Being expected to have, and share, an opinion;❔How often the question, answer or context is shades of grey (vs black and white);👫 The opportunities to broaden my skills and network (e.g. Co-chairing the European Leveraged Finance Association Loan Investor Committee for 2 years, and speaking at Crafty Counsel events);🌄 Having the freedom (and encouragement from my employer) to try new things and lead on new initiatives. In the 'surprise' camp:📑 How little of my job relates to contract reviews;🤔 How much of my job can be classified as problem-solving;👌🏼 The enjoyment I've found in leaving my comfort zone and expanding my skillset outside of legal (e.g. setting up Invesco's trainee programme, leading a tech initiative within Legal, helping push forward a firmwide cultural change initiative);🤓 How often I'm asked for my opinion on non-legal matters.Additionally, it felt like the right time to step down as a Trustee and Director of Luminary after 4 wonderful years. There's a whole separate post somewhere about what a privilege that was, and what I learned along the way. I'm excited for the wholly new challenge of parenthood in the coming year. And after that? I'm actually excited NOT to have a map for how the next 6 years of my in-house career will develop. I now have proof that if you're open to all opportunities, and say yes to the right ones, you'll end up in a good place. #inhousecounsel #inhouselegal #inhouse #careerdevelopment

DWT Summer Tip #4 - be proactive.Anne Marie Tavella said "Seek guidance from your assigning attorneys early and often, particularly for challenging assignments and especially as the summer starts to end. They will be appreciative of your initiative to get the project done correctly rather than if they receive unhelpful work product right before you depart. It's always best to end the summer on a high note."Follow me for more tips!Davis Wright Tremaine LLP#summerinternship #tipsforsuccess
